Mosquitoes are arguably the most medically important group of insects. In addition to causing severe annoyance and allergic reaction, mosquitoes found in California are capable of spreading many diseases to humans and animals including:

Aedes aegypti, also known as the yellow fever mosquito, is an invasive species native to Africa and is highly adaptive to its environment. Aedes albopictus, also known as the tiger mosquito, is a very adaptable species native to Southeast Asia.

There are many insects that resemble mosquitoes. Sometimes what appears to be a mosquito is actually another type of insect. Below are the insects most commonly mistaken for mosquitoes. None of these insects bite or carry diseases in Alameda County, but many can still be annoying. Many of these hatch in very large numbers and are attracted to lights around the home.

Mosquitoes need standing water in order to lay their eggs and develop. What most people don’t realize is the surprising number of areas around their own house where mosquitoes can find the standing water they need.
